Emotional & Social Benefits of Massage

While massage helps with the physical pain for people suffering from various conditions, it can help with the emotional and social suffering too.

There are various therapies designed to help people with disabilities cope with life. Massage therapy releases endorphins, which help with an overall improvement of well being to ease symptoms of depression and anxiety, relieve anger and promotes calm throughout the mind and body.

People with developmental issues may be uncomfortable with touch. Massage may give them a feeling of connection.

Massage may help patients to regain some control in their muscles and range of motion increases due to regular stimulation.

Massage is usually a safe and effective way to manage pain, muscle issues, various disorders, and symptoms.

Massage Therapy for people with disability can benefit conditions such as:

A few Massage Benefits:
Helps with the management of pain. Massage is proven to increase the body’s serotonin levels. It’s soothing, relaxing effect on the body releases tension in the muscles.
– Massage increases blood flow, promoting better circulation.
– Offers better mobility and a sense of independence.
– Eases the stiffness of the muscles and joints.
– Increases flexibility and range of motion.

A few Massage Benefits:
Various massage techniques are applied depending on the type of Cerebral Palsy, which help calm involuntary movements, relaxes tight painful muscles & helps control painful contractions. Massage improves the strength of muscles around joints which will help stabilise poor balance. As muscle tone increases and joint proprioception improves, the patient’s coordination can improve.

A few Massage Benefits:
When bound to a wheelchair, the constant pressure from staying in one position starts to break down the skin causing lesions. Massage increases blood circulation and eases pressure. This reduces the risk of skin breakdown and lesions.
As the muscles are not working, they start to break down or become atrophic. Regular massage can help to improve muscle tone by stimulating the tissue. This also lessens spasticity, eases pain in joints and can greatly improve the sensation of phantom pains. Massage also increases the range of movement by improving the muscles flexibility.

Some developmental disabilities:
– Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
– ADHD
– Autism
These conditions are known to cause mental, emotional and social development issues. Sufferers tend to struggle with depression, anxiety and panic attacks. In some instances they are also known to avoid human touch.

A few Massage Benefits:
As massage increases both serotonin and dopamine production in the body, it has a significant effect on calming and relaxing people with these symptoms.
As their stress and anxiety are relieved, they are calmer and less prone to the various emotional and behavioral outbursts they may be prone to.
